The President of the Association for fertility and reproductive health (AFRH), Dr Ibrahim Wada has urged all state governments in Nigeria to have regulations and guidelines to ensure quackery is reduced in fertility medicine.

According to him, individuals seeking to have their childrent through fertility medicine have fallen prey to those who have no medical training as well as those who have some form of medical training without expertise in reproductive medicine.

Speaking during the launch of a policy document which serves as a regulation and guidelines for assisted reproductive technology (ART) in Lagos State, Wada insisted the 22-page documents will guide a patient on where to go and what to expect as well as guide the practitioners.

In his remarks, the past president of AFRH, Dr Faye Iketubosin noted that the document which took five years to collate will ensure people who practise fertility medicine in Lagos state are registered with the government and also has a minimum standard.

The Commissioner for Health, Lagos state, Dr Jide Idris said the guidelines will “put sanity in the system if not everyone will be affected.” He stated that it is pertinent for health facilities offering ART services in Lagos to adhere to the document which he describes as mandatory while warning them there will be sanctions for those who defect.
