A non-governmental organisation, ProtectOzone Sustainable Livelihood Initiative, has urged the Federal Government to build cold-rooms from solar technology to elongate produce nutrients and shelf-life

Olalekan Sipasi, the founder of the organisation, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Sipasi said the call became necessary because cold-rooms could preserve the nutrients in food, which could be lost to other means of preservation.

“If properly exploited, Nigeria can produce food, not only for itself but for neighbouring countries.

“A world without hunger is possible if parameters, which shored up the cost of agricultural production, particularly in Nigeria, were addressed.”

He said that many farm settlements or communities could be given lower electricity tariffs to encourage agricultural production as farmers needed to leverage on technology, which required electricity to function.

“I feel personally that farmers should not be made to pay same tariff as ordinary consumers.

“The farming communities should have lower tariff to have increased food production.

“If we have lower tariffs, farm produce can be refrigerated to guarantee longer shelf-life, particularly in the rural communities,” he said.

He commended the government on FADAMA programmes and other initiatives, adding that such programmes have increased harvest.
