There is an urgent need for the federal government to check population growth because at the moment, the nation’s population is over 175 million and it continues to grow by an estimated 3.2 per cent per year. Reports say if this growth persist, the country’s population could double in just 22 years.
Now, the problem is not that the population is growing, but does the nation have the resources to take care of it? Do we have enough hospitals, schools, roads and other necessary social amenities for an escalating population? The authourities need to look into this matter carefully and look for a way to tackle it.
People who give birth must be made to understand the implication of having more kids than they can cater for. There should be intensified awareness campaigns across the country on the implication of population growth.
Not long ago, we saw what meningitis patients in Zamfara State went through. Apart from the lack of vaccine, many of them had to sleep on bare floors, due to lack of adequate beds in the hospitals.
This is just one of many similar incidents. The federal government must do something to check population explosion or work vigorously to match resources with population.
