First of all let us define what is a crossover? It’s a 4×4 built over a platform belonging to a smaller cars. From Wikipedia a crossover is a vehicle built on a car platform and borrowing features of a traditional Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The first of its kind popularly bought in the car industry was the Nissan Murano. When it was launched in 2003, buyer didn’t know it would come with extreme comfort compared to the normal 4×4 meant for rough terrains that most people won’t even drive on. But as it is, many buyer across the globe love it even if it was not as good off road as the normal 4×4- really don’t be fooled a lot of crossover would likely fail on some serious terrain test. After the Murano then we noticed the infinite FX, the BMW X3, and recently the Q5 and the Volvo XC60.

Now the X1 came out and perhaps we can expect more. What makes people go for these cars in the first place? The obvious is that everybody wants to feel cocooned like they are inside a jet destroyer. Perhaps they want to feel invincible- I wouldn’t know.  But here is one thing crossovers wouldn’t do is make you feel like you are in a proper 4×4. Believe me if you buy an X3 or Murano, which is well known, it’s not just a crossover but a small car raise from the ground with upgrades to make it look and try to feel like a 4×4 by simply borrowing looks from SUV.  

So why have the car industries turn to crossovers? Well it’s the work of marketer’s feedback perhaps. But does it solve a need in the segment in which it has created? Well yes! For a fact many people believe having a 4×4 improves your status and no matter the size. Just as long as you don’t use it off road then you don’t have a problem. Second it’s more affordable and still practical for everyday living. Thirdly it’s comfort is similar to that found in smaller cars-  perhaps adding the notion that it’s cheaper to maintain which is not necessarily so.  

So should anyone buy a crossover? Well as far as it’s the Murano, X5, RAV4 and more in the lot, I’d say yes because in every sense it’s cheaper which is what it should be when you pay for a 3 in 1 product. This is not the case with many other crossovers. But if you are picking anything different go for a proper Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) like an LR4, Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser or a Proper Range Rover -mostly known as ‘the Grand’.  

So why have they turned to crossovers? Simply put it this way people love them so much.
