A corps member, Dr. Vincent Chidera, has said that he built a four-unit toilet for the settlers of Dakwa- Dei-Dei community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to curb open defecation and its attendant challenges in the community.

He said open defecation exposed the residents to various illnesses.

Dr Chidera, who is serving with El-Hussain Specialist Hospital Dakwa Dei-Dei, said he observed that children below five years were always brought in for diarrhoea ailment.

Speaking at the community during the commissioning ceremony of the toilet, Dr Chidera said the project was also a means to advocate for an end to open defecation in the community.

Chidera said at the moment, there was a well which the people could fetch water from to clean up and maintain the facility, stressing that he was already speaking with some people to assist with a borehole so that water could be connected to the toilet.

He donated buckets, kettles amongst other items to the settlers.

On his part, Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, said he was at the commissioning because of the passion behind the project.

He noted that the project would help the people in the settlement and put an end to the rise in illnesses in the area.

Coordinator, NYSC FCT, Hajiya Walida Siddique Isa, urged the people in the community to make good use of the facility and maintain it properly.
