A businessman and former vice president of the Nigeria Golf Federation, Chief Samuel Anyamele, popularly known as Onwa, has explained his decision to donate N10 million to the Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) ahead of Nigeria’s hosting of the All Africa Challenge Trophy (ACCT).
The championship is scheduled to hold from November 1 to November 7, 2026, at the IBB International Golf and Country Club.
Speaking to Golf Digest, Anyamele said hosting golfers from across Africa presents a unique opportunity to reshape global perceptions about Nigeria.
“Hosting the whole of Africa is a big deal. It gives us the opportunity to market our country. Many people are afraid to visit Nigeria because of negative stories they hear, but the truth is that Nigeria is a great country and a safe place to be.”
He stressed that nation-building requires shared responsibility and sacrifice.
“Rome was not built in a day. As individuals, we must put our hands together to support anything that will make this country great. That is why I have decided to support LGAN with my widow’s mite.”
Anyamele likened the scale of the tournament to major continental events such as the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, calling for government support.
“It is not easy to host over 20 African countries. This is similar in scale to WAFCON. The government must also come in and support this effort because it will further project Nigeria’s name on the world map.”
He further highlighted golf’s economic value, noting its impact on tourism, hospitality and small businesses.
“The game of golf is a major source of revenue for any country. Even when we host local tournaments in Nigeria, everyone benefits — from small-scale vendors to hotels and transport operators. Now imagine the impact of hosting an international tournament of this magnitude.”
He concluded that the benefits extend beyond sports.
“The immense economic benefits of hosting this tournament cannot be overemphasised. This is not just about sports; it is about economic growth, tourism, and national image.”
