Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has said the provision of adequate security in Nasarawa state forms a cardinal focus in his agenda to govern the state because security is the foundation for development.

Adamu, who is contesting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for Nasarawa State said security and the safety of lives and property is the foundation of development.

The former IGP further explained that his career in the police, which saw him command operations across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, has exposed him to a wide range of security challenges adding that he understands the workings of security institutions, including the police, military, civil defence corps, vigilance groups and traditional structures, and the necessary things to be done to make them work.

Explaining that he intends to pursue the economic development of Nasarawa, it is only apt that he secures the state for the people and intending investors saying the latter will not come where there is insecurity.

“Farmers will not go to the fields when fear dominates. Without security, every promise on jobs, roads and healthcare collapses,” he stressed

Dissecting the security situation in the state, the former IGP said the major issues in Nasarawa are farmer-herder conflicts and kidnapping. 

“So, my approach is multi-layered. First, we will create jobs, especially for the youth, through agriculture and mining. Second, we will promote dialogue and conflict resolution at the community level, bringing farmers and herders together to agree on acceptable norms. Third, we will strengthen community policing by working closely with traditional institutions. They understand their people and can provide valuable intelligence,” he said.

The ex-IGP said his extensive security background positions him to tackle persistent insecurity in Nasarawa and neighbouring states.

He said his consultations across the state’s 147 wards revealed deep economic hardship among residents hence his  plans to improve infrastructure, focusing on expanding power supply and road networks linking rural communities to urban centres to ease the movement of agricultural produce, alongside ensuring access to clean water.

He urged Nigerians to support the second-term bid of President Bola Tinubu, saying that the administration’s reforms, if sustained beyond 2027, could reshape the country’s socio-economic and political landscape.
