A 28-year-old man, Abubakar Iliyasu, has confessed his involvement in the incident that led to the death of his benefactor.

Abubakar had allegedly stabbed the victim, one Mrs Janet Okoye, in her home in the OrileIganmu area of Lagos before bolting away with her Toyota Sienna car.

After killing the deceased, the suspect headed straight with the vehicle to his village in the Ankpa area of Kogi State.

In his confessional statement to the police, the suspect claimed that he attacked the deceased with a knife because she was able to identify him.

“The deceased is my only benefactor. I scaled the fence into her premises to steal. Initially, my intention was not to bolt away with the vehicle. I only went there to steal some money and other valuables. But I stabbed her when she saw and identified me.

“I left her bleeding and horribly left with the vehicle. The next day, I drove the car to Ankpa. I was arrested in my village where I had gone to hide,” he said.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed his arrest, said detectives of the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) traced and arrested one Abubakar Iliyasu for the alleged murder of 65-year-old Mrs Jane Okoye.

Hundeyin stated that the deceased was killed by some criminal gang members in her home in the OrileIganmu area of Lagos on April 2, 2025.

He said following the report of her killing, detectives from SCID, acting on the instructions of the Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, swung into action.

“Following the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for discreet and thorough investigation, a team of homicide detectives promptly swung into action, deploying both intelligence and technical resources to get the suspect apprehended and recover the stolen property.

“Efforts of the detectives yielded positive results as the principal suspect, Abubakar Iliyasu, who had absconded with the deceased’s vehicle and other personal items, was traced to and arrested in Ankpa, Kogi State.

“The vehicle was recovered in good condition and has since been secured as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

“The suspect is currently being detained at the SCID, Yaba, where he is assisting investigators with useful information,” he said.
