‘Why I stabbed my husband to death’

A 23-year-old lady, Stella Peter, told homicide detectives in Lagos yesterday that she killed her husband because he wouldn’t accede to her financial demand to celebrate their daughter’s birthday.

Peter is being held for allegedly stabbing her husband, Bala Haruna, 25, dead with a kitchen knife.

The suspect confessed to the police in her statement that her husband had refused to sponsor the birthday of their daughter, who turned one-year-old yesterday, Tuesday September 17, 2019.

“I begged my husband to give me money to organise a small birthday party for our daughter, who would turn one-year-old. I begged him all night up to the next day, but he refused.

“I got angry over his nonchalant attitude over the issue. Out of anger, I grabbed hold of a kitchen knife and stabbed him. I regret my action now because I never wished him dead. How would it be said that I killed the father of my child with my own hands?” she sobbed.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said that at about 6am on Tuesday, homicide detectives from the Surulere Division arrested Peter for stabbing her husband, Haruna, to death.

Elkana said that the couple, who were not legally married, lived together at No 2, Tejuosho Avenue, Surulere, Lagos, for three years and have a baby, who just turned one.

The police spokesman said that an argument had ensued between them, which turned violent, during which Stella used a kitchen knife to stab Haruna in the back, which led to his death.

“The woman accused the man of refusing to release money for their daughter’s birthday party. The suspect confessed to the commission of the crime. She will be charged to court with murder at the end of investigation,” he said.
