Mr. Tunde Aminu is a poultry farmer who resides in Passo, Gwagwalada area council of the Federal Capital, (FCT).

Recently, Aminu stopped the business due to what he said was the unfavourable business environment and the high cost of poultry feeds and other items used in the farming business.

Narrating his experience to Daily Trust, Aminu said, “The day-old chicks (50) that we use to buy for N15,000, is now N28,500.

“A bag of feed, like the Tiko, is now N8,500, but we used to buy it for N6300.

“The second type we used to buy for N6000 before the increase is now N7800. The increase in price has made the business uninteresting because when you increase the price of chicken, customers will be shouting that there is no money.”

He said for now, he has ventured into selling recharge cards, buying and selling of provision and food stuffs.

“A normal chicken which we used to sell for N2000 now costs N3500, some even sell higher. Even the cost of vitamins we give the birds have increased; they have added two hundred naira to each of them. That was what my neighbour that is still doing the business told me.

“There are about three types of vitamins and the cost of all has increased. You also need to vaccinate the birds against diseases. Before, the vaccines used to be N450 to N500, but now it is N700,” he said.

According to him, when you join all these things to the stress of the work, you will know that it is not really a good business, but many people are still doing it, so it depends on individuals.
