Why I was redeployed to Kaduna – AIG Nasarawa

Sir, before an AIG is redeployed to a command, something serious must have happened. In this case what necessitated your posting?
I am the AIG in charge of  Zone 7 and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Kaduna State police command falls under this zone. The Inspector General of Police received some reports about the happenings in Kaduna, so he sent me to come and verify and address the issues.
Have you been able to verify some of those things and what are you doing about them?
Well, the issues involve kidnapping, murder and other crimes. When I came, being a former commissioner of police in the state, I made contacts with my policemen and other sources outside the Force and I was able to identify the problem. We know that there are some reported cases of kidnapping and murder, but they were somehow exaggerated. What we discovered was not exactly what was reported through various sources.  However, there were some cases and that is why we have decided to embark on robust patrol and raid of kidnappers hideouts. So far, we have succeeded in arresting many of the criminals.
One of the major cases which necessitated your deployment here is that of the abduction and murder of late Colonel Samaila Inusa, but till date we have not heard anything on the incident, how far have you gone?
That is one of the reasons I am here, not the major reason, but as I said earlier, the military authorities together with a team sent by the Inspector General of Police are currently working with men of the Kaduna State command on that matter.
We learnt that you interrogated the wife of the late Colonel and that she made some statements, how true is that?
That’s not true and that’s not part of my mandate.
What exactly have you discovered since you arrived?
We found out that the whole command structure is relaxed, right from the top to the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs). I have told them the truth; they were not doing what they are supposed to do. Most of them have over stayed in Kaduna State command. My investigation revealed that some of them have spent up to 30 years in one command and I think that is not healthy for the police.
Would you say that is responsible for the increase in crime in the state?
It could be part of it, because they have over stayed, they are no more effective. They were not properly supervised, and that is why most of them have relaxed and have allowed the criminals to take over.
On Wednesday, residents set a suspected kidnapper ablaze around Barnawa area, has the command been able to ascertain if he was actually a kidnapper and what are you doing to stop mob action?
Actually, we are not in support of this kind of mob action, but he was actually a kidnapper. The three-year-old boy that he kidnapped, I have forgotten his name, was recovered and handed over to his father.
How long do you intend to stay in Kaduna?
My time in Kaduna does not have a limit, it is part of my command and I can stay here for one or two months. I can go to Niger State and stay for one month, so it is part of the job and we are not expected to stay in one place.
When you were CP, Kaduna State,  the crime rate reduced; how were you able to achieve that?
Well, I do not want to blow my trumpet, but actually, it is just commitment, once you are committed, it is very easy to succeed.
What measures have been put in place to salvage the situation?
Most importantly is the fact that we are transferring most of these officers that have overstayed in the command and with the CP, Zone 7, even those that were asleep have woken up from their slumber. I am confident that the commissioner will perform.
