The Centre for Community Development and Research Network (CCDRN), has said past interventions to stop the almajiri system failed  because they were not backed by facts.

Speaking to Caliphate Trust the Technical Director of the network, Abba Adamu, said governments did not usually conduct researches to uncover the real issues before embarking on policies and decisions.

“That is why most of the past interventions on Almajiri failed because they were not backed by facts, and past decisions are not reviewed before new ones are taken,” he said

According to Adamu, that was why their network sponsored researches on remodelling the Almajiri system of education in four states of the north.

He explained that the essence of the research was to assist governments to understand the real issues and the best way to remodel the system.

He faulted some states which either abolished the system or repatriated almajirai to their states of origin which action, he said, would never be the solution to the problem.

Adamu  said  there were 9.3 million almajirai in the country.

Presenting the outcomes of their researches, Dr. Nasiru Baba said most parents in the rural areas preferred to send their children to distant Qur’anic schools.

“The belief is  that distance from home trains learners in endurance and being  independent,” he said

The don also said the parents’ income determined their readiness to take responsibility for the upkeep and education of their children.

“Therefore, policy provisions on integration should lighten the cost burden of education on parents as far as possible,” he said.
