The agitation led to the fall of President Hosni Mubarak. The suffrage that ensued ushered in the new dawn of democracy different from the diarchy that had been in operation there. The democracy brought to power Dr Mohammed Morsi. Within one year, the mili-tary overthrew Morsi because of “unrest” in the country.
They attempted to justify Mor-si’s removal with reasons that could easily be repudiated. Initially, it was said that Morsi was in prison for unexplained reasons. When that “could not hold water”, the military dished out another story saying that Morsi was among the escapees from a prison in Israel. This too has been rejected by Egyptians. It is difficult to believe that a country that built the first university on this earth, a country that produced Nobel Prize winners like Ahmed Zewail in Chemistry and Naguib Mahfouz in Literature would have government intelligence agents that would not have information about contestants prior to a general election.
As a consequence of the scena-rio, two conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, any country without a strong economy is bound to be controlled by outside interests – interests whose focus is on the country’s natural resources or her potentialities. Egypt has able-bodied men and women. The United States cannot envisage Egypt attacking Israel as it happened during the period of Gamel Abdul Naser, hence the support and imposition of stooge at the helm of affairs in the country who would serve to effectuate their master’s plans in the country (a so-called leader whose leadership would clearly demonstrates dis-connect between leader and the led and who would keep mute while America and Israel unleash terror, under different guises, on the people he claims to rule). So never mind that the United States denounced the coup.
Secondly, the West, particularly the United States, underestimated the possibility that the Ikhwan (Muslim Brotherhood Movement) could present a candidate that could appeal to other Muslim groups in Egypt, making Morsi’s ascendancy a reality. That the United States denounced the military coup in Egypt is to hoodwink the politically naïve.
Finally, the Muslim Brother-hood Movement is a peaceful organization whose main objective is to promote the practice of Islam among its members in Egypt. It is not a terrorist group. The military in Egypt must understand their fellow citizens well. Use of force, killing and maiming would not deter a determined people. It would in fact make them more resilient. This was demonstrated in Russia during the period of Boris Yelsin.
