Former Presidential candidate of the African Liberation Party (ALP) in the 2011 general elections, Chief Osita Emmanuel Okereke, has faulted the pressure mounted on President Goodluck Jonathan to visit Chibok community in Borno State, where Boko Haram insurgents abducted over 200 female schoolgirls, saying it was an ‘unnecessary adventure’.
He said the activities of the sect was the handiwork of desperate politicians scheming for power in the 2015 general elections and recalled that the Borno State Government was advised against allowing examinations which the students were writing at the period of their abduction take place at the community owing to the insecurity in the area.
Okereke who is also the Director-General of a Taskforce on Illegal Importation of Small Arms and Light Weapons was speaking yesterday in Abuja after being conferred as the Patron of the Southern Youth for Peace Initiative (SYPI).
“The wave of insurgency had soared and the President came to save the country. Yet, people are saying he should go to Chibok. People say President Jonathan should go to Chibok; for what? In a country where there is a Governor and Minister of Education? In fact, the whole Chibok issue is a sabotage and scam. Politicians who are desperate for power in the 2015 general elections are the people sponsoring Boko Haram. About 30 per cent of the country’s borders remained unmanned by security agents,” Okereke said.
He recalled the threat by some politicians to make the country ungovernable should Jonathan win the 2011 election and described those bent on perpetrating evil in the country as “persons who have stolen our wealth, vision and everything about Nigeria and made it difficult for the youths to progress.”
Okereke lamented that the youths upon whom future leadership of the country rests, were being wantonly killed by insurgents for the sins which they did not commit, saying the youths have the duty to ensure that President Jonathan is re-elected in 2015 as to protect their future.
President of the group, Emeka Ikejiofor, said they were impressed by the achievements of the NATFORCE, especially in the drastic reduction of illegal importation of light arms into the country.
