The Labour Party (LP) aspirant for the chairmanship position at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Ajaegbu has explained why federal, state lawmakers and others were defecting from the party.
He gave the explanation Tuesday in Abuja ahead of the 2026 FCT Area Council elections and the 2027 general elections, where he also picked the LP expression of interest and nomination forms for the AMAC chairmanship contest.
Weekly Trust reports that some lawmakers at the National and state assemblies had in recent times defected from LP to other parties, mostly the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ajaegbu, however said that he has been known for his character and consistency.
“The synergy between the party and the obedient movement at the time (of the lectioneering) was not well managed. And it was because it was not well managed, the people were not given the choice to actually choose someone they wanted.
“So, politicians who had names, or those who don’t have names, decided to roll with the party and through that massive wave entered politics. So, they entered politics without the ideology of LP. They didn’t go there with the ideology of Labour Party. Because if you are truly there for the ideology of Labour Party, mama is crying, papa is crying, the king is crying, and you are defecting?”
He also promised to digitalise AMAC administration and to make it a mega city through the instrumentality of technology and massive investments.
He said his areas of focus, according to his mission statement, included infrastructure development, education, health, economic empowerment, climate change as well as security, justice and community safety.
“It is evident that the current leadership has performed below par in delivering the dividends to our people at the grassroots. AMAC which is supposed to be the husband beacon of development, a shining example for other local governments to emulate, is still characterized with poor infrastructure in communities, inadequate healthcare services, poor waste management, lack of transparency, and the list goes on.
“It’s time for a new leadership that priorities transparency, accountability, and community engagement. I want to assure our supporters, party members and the general public that I’m dedicated to upholding the values, ideologies and principles of our party. My aspiration is driven by a passion to serve and make positive change,” Ajaegbu said.
The FCT LP chairman, Comrade Peter Diugwu Chukwuemeka, assured the aspirant of the party’s support and urged party faithful to be strong in defending their interest, interest of democracy and wellbeing of the people.
