The Chairman of Dass Local Government in Bauchi State, Mohammed Jibo, has commended the harmonious relationship between the state government and local government councils.
Speaking during a media tour of local governments in the state, Jibo credited the smooth working relationship to the support of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, who he said ensures that grants due to councils are transmitted without interference.
“Despite concerns about local government autonomy, Bauchi State has consistently supported us. Our grants remain untouched by the state government. We know what is coming from the federal level, and the governor still supports us with additional grants to execute grassroots projects,” he said.
Jibo described local government autonomy as a positive step towards strengthening federalism but noted that councils cannot undertake large-scale projects in isolation. According to him, collaboration with state and federal governments, as well as other stakeholders, is essential for success.
Highlighting the benefits of autonomy, Jibo said his administration is consolidating on Governor Mohammed’s award-winning rural infrastructure drive by extending primary healthcare centres to wards and villages, procuring tractors and fertilisers to support farmers, and constructing shops for local businessmen.
