Why Nigeria must teach AI and ethics in our schools

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept. It is already shaping how we learn, work, communicate, and even think. Around the world, governments are embedding AI education into schools to prepare young people for a future where machines will complement human intelligence. Nigeria cannot afford to lag. If we limit AI and ethics education to universities alone, we risk leaving a generation unprepared for the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.

Recently, Professor Umaru Pate, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Kashere, stressed the urgent need for Nigerian universities to introduce courses on AI and ethics. His point is valid, but it raises a broader question: why wait until university? Shouldn’t Nigerian children learn about AI tools, critical thinking, and responsible use much earlier?

Globally, countries are already embedding AI in their schools curriculum. The United Arab Emirates has introduced AI classes for children as young as four, ensuring they gain early exposure to concepts like prompt writing and ethical use. China has gone even further, making AI education mandatory across all levels, from primary through secondary schools. Saudi Arabia has announced that an AI curriculum will become part of its school system by 2025, while Australia, through a partnership with Amazon Web Services, is teaching one million primary and secondary students AI skills with an emphasis on ethics. These countries understand that AI education is not about producing coders alone but about raising citizens who can think critically in an AI-driven world.

Nigeria is beginning to catch up. Earlier this year, the federal government trained 6,000 senior secondary teachers in AI pedagogy, while edtech startups like uLesson and Schoola are already using AI tools to create personalised lessons, tests, and study plans for Nigerian students. In Lagos, education experts have called for AI-driven curricula, citing the successes of countries like China and Finland.

However, big challenges remain. Most Nigerian schools still lack electricity, internet connectivity, and trained teachers. AI literacy is low, and ethical concerns, such as bias, misinformation, and over-reliance, are not yet being addressed at scale. These gaps, if ignored, could widen the inequality between Nigeria and other nations embracing AI.

Introducing AI education early will yield several benefits. It will help children develop critical thinking by teaching them not to accept AI answers blindly but to question, verify, and refine information. It will nurture creativity by exposing students to tools that can be applied to arts, science, and problem-solving in new ways. It will also ground them in ethics and responsibility, helping to prevent misuse of AI and cultivating digital citizenship from a young age. Most importantly, it will prepare them for the workforce of tomorrow, where AI literacy will be as essential as reading and numeracy.

To keep pace with global trends, Nigeria MUST move decisively. The government MUST develop a National AI-in-Education Strategy that spans primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. AI literacy should be integrated into core subjects such as mathematics, ICT, and social studies, and teachers MUST be continuously trained in AI pedagogy. Partnerships with edtech firms should be strengthened and encouraged to provide low-cost, Nigeria-focused learning tools, while equity must be prioritised so that rural schools benefit through offline or solar-powered technologies. Alongside these steps, ethical safeguards must be embedded in teaching, ensuring that students learn both the power and the limits of AI.

Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. The question is whether Nigeria will raise a generation of passive consumers or critical, ethical innovators. Teaching AI and ethics at every educational level is no longer optional. IT IS URGENT. This is not just about technology; it is about shaping the kind of society we want: one that can think critically, innovate boldly, and compete globally.
