Why Nigeria needs cancer registries-Board

The Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN) has called for the establishment of cancer registries across the country.

The board said doing so would help reduce the rising cases of cancer in Nigeria.

Registrar of the board, Mohammed Ibrahim Mami, made the call during a workshop on cancer registries held in collaboration with the Medicaid Cancer Foundation in Abuja.

He said it was also important to harmonize cancer registries for effective data collection process in Nigerian hospitals.

Dr. Ramatu Hassan of Medicaid Cancer Foundation said statistics had suggested that 70 percent of new cancer cases would be recorded by 2030.

The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said the ministry was putting mechanisms in place to combat non-communicable diseases like cancer.
