Dakum who was the director general of the PDP governorship campaign in 2003 in an interview with newsmen in his Jos home said everybody was surprised at the insistence by the PDP leader in the state to choose only somebody from his ethnic group.
“When the build-up to election came and the rumour started that he (Jang) was going to put a Berom person from the northern zone; in my head then was that you can’t even put it in northern zone, talk less of another Berom. They said it’s what Jang is thinking. I said no, he couldn’t think this. Many of even Berom people said this is not right. Some elders close to him began to see that the man is naked. They tried to clothe him, don’t do this. The church headed by CAN wrote formally in November (2014) to say don’t do this, but he went ahead.”
He insisted in the interview that by backing his kinsman, Senator Gyang Pwajok, to become Plateau State’s next governor, Jang was only trying to perpetuate himself in power and such possibility would not help the unity of the state.
Dakum asserted: “Everything he has been doing is to build up an oligarchy headed by himself. I knew that something was going on with him that if care was not taken, it was going to affect the whole state. For me, any right thinking Plateau person should not support a Berom governorship candidate. I have every reason to support a Berom candidate because my wife is Berom, but it is morally not right. Rev Father Mathew Kukah said democracy dividends is not about roads, water, health care. He said if it were about projects, Germans should apologize to Hitler. He said if democracy were all about infrastructure, why did we have to dismantle apartheid?
“Democracy is about participation of people. No matter what you do for people, if they are not participants, democracy is not complete,” he said.
