Christmas decorations come in several types like trees, flowers, lights, wreaths, candles, musical toys , bells, candy canes, garland, stockings, and figures like angels and snow sheets, among others. They also vary from country to country.
The colours used for Christmas decoration range from pine green, snow white, heart red, blue and sometimes gold and silver. They also carry common images like Baby Jesus, Father Christmas, Santa Claus, and the star of Bethlehem.
The Home Front sought to find out from people why they decorate their homes during Christmas.
Mrs Rosemary Enemali said the decorations is part of what makes Christmas a festive period. She said they are decorations you don’t find in and around the home or organizations except during Christmas. “They differentiate the days Christmas are celebrated from other days in the year. The sight of the decorations and Christmas music in the air makes the celebration colourful and interesting,” she explained.
“It is one of the ways to celebrate Jesus’ birthday ,” said Mrs Christiana Mkpa . “It puts everyone in the mood and remembrance of our lord who is the celebrant of the birthday we mark.”
Mathew Japhet on his part said: “It is a tradition we met our parents doing since they started celebrating Christmas in the country and we continued with it because it is good. Everywhere in the world where Christmas is celebrated people use Christmas decoration, even abroad and our remote villages.”
Mrs Blessing Ameh said just as a Christian is expected to have a pure heart in his or her worship of God, our homes are expected to be specially decorated and kept neat His honour and to show the joy of celebrating Him during Christmas.
Nickson Akande said the Christmas period will look dull and dry without decorations. “The Christmas lights, trees and other decorations everywhere make people feel good, it makes the celebration colourful” he said.
Dorothy Garuba said she does not know why people do it but she decorates because her children like it.
Solomon Nwachukwu said he decorates his home because it puts him and his family in the mood of Christmas saying that is why he buys, flowers, Christmas lights and toys annually to decorate his home during Christmas.
