Why road projects fail in Nigeria – Minister

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani, has attributed the reason for road failure in Nigeria to most engineers taking the responsibilities they are not specialized to handle.
The minister made this observation last week during  the opening ceremony of the training workshop on output and performance based contracting of  Nigerians organized by the Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers in Abuja.
He urged the institution to be firm at regulating application into the institute, stressing that not all engineers are qualified to perform on highway constructions.
The minister also lamented that the cost charges on project by most engineers are outrageous.
Earlier, chairman of the Institution, Engr Isa Usman Emoabino said the high cost of sponsoring training abroad necessitated the institution to collaborate with the International Road Federation (IRF) to improve its capacity building programme.
He also said the training would cover a wide range of areas and would be based on accepted best practices and relevant applications as they relate to project planning, quality assurance, programming and target evaluation.
