The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has decried multiple taxes and levies increasingly being imposed on telecom facilities by government agencies.

It said the frequent enforcement actions of the  agencies to compel payment result in extensive disruption of telecoms operations, thereby affecting customer experience.

ALTON’s head of operation, Mr. Gbolahan Awonuga made this known at the 4th quarterly open forum of the Industry Consumer Advisory Forum (ICAF) themed: “progressing from customer service to customer experience – The consumer’s point of view’ in Lagos.

These interventions according to him considerably increase the lead time to roll out, inflate costs of deploying infrastructure and occasion degradation of network quality.

In addition to the aforementioned challenge, he noted that the telecoms service providers are operating and maintaining four separate networks instead of one which include: power supply network, security network and other ancillary services, core telecoms network and transmission network.

These functions, he said, depart from the core business mainly due to the infrastructure and operational shortcomings of the Nigerian environment.
