Why we pulled down Fela’s statue at Allen roundabout – Lagos govt

The Lagos State government yesterday gave reason why it pulled down the statue of the late Afrobeat king, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, hitherto mounted at the Allen roundabout, Ikeja.

The state government said that the statue of the music icon was one of the causes of gridlock in the area.

Mr Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that the statue was pulled down because the roundabout where it was located was identified as one of the four locations in Lagos that was causing gridlock.

Akosile identified other areas gridlock was being experienced to be Ikotun, Lekki-Epe expressway and Maryland.

Akosile told journalists that the art work would be relocated to a spot it wouldn’t be causing gridlock.

The statue of the late Afrobeat legend was situated at the Allen roundabout by the immediate past governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode.
