In line with the vision to stir the waves of tourism in Lagos State, The state is to host (LAAFEST) in November, an idea which followed the purpose of the tourism summit held in Lagos on Monday.
The National Convener, Lagos Ankara Festival (LAAFEST) Mr. Wole Oladunjoye has explained that idea of celebrating the local fabric festival is one that aims at exploring the numerous potentials in its market.
At a briefing in Lagos, Oladunjoye said the Ankara fabric which is very popular in Yoruba land professes a lot of cultural values of the race and the festival being packaged is geared towards promoting to the cultures and values of the fabric to the global audience.
“The Lagos State Government in its bid to formulate tourism policy for the state, held a summit few days ago and the major take way from the speakers at the programme is that as Lagosians and creative heads, we can only achieve a unique tourism legacy by looking inward and developing ideas that foreigners have imbibed from us.
“One of such idea is Lagos Ankara festival project. Lagos Ankara festival is borne from the desire to propagate the Yoruba culture and race globally leveraging on the popular Ankara brand. The LAAFEST idea was borne out to the need to create laudable initiatives to support Governor Akinwummi Ambodes’ unparalleled vision for making Lagos the Entertainment and tourism capital of Africa,” Oladunjoye said.
According to the LAAFEST boss, the Lagos Ankara currently market nets over N1 billion and that with the festival being planned, the amount can be quadrupled in the first three years. He said the festival initiative will be partnering with the State Government to ensure that the festival catalyses the re-awakening of the moribund textile industry in the country.
“We want to partner with state government to see how what used to happen in Kaduna textile companies and Lagos textile companies returned to the glorious era. Through this festival, we hope to bring back the moribund textile industry,” he said.
Reeling out the programmes of event, Oladunjoye said the festival will start with an exhibition that will later be followed by an international fashion show, with the overall winner known as Omidan Ankara.
