As it stands, Ukraine is not yet a member of NATO. Therefore, Article 5 of NATO which guarantees NATO coming to the defence of members in case of attack cannot be activated.
Again, at the United Nations Security Council meeting at 3 a.m. today (24th February, 2021), all 15 members are preaching for peace; none is condemning Russia directly out of political gain except the UK, France and the United States.
For instance, the African Representatives at the United Nations Security Council (Gabon, Kenya and Ghana) specifically recognise the need to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty, but refuse to openly censure Russia and outline practical actions.
China’s representative on the other hand in a terse statement during the emergency meeting of the Security Council maintains neutrality and never condemns Moscow too – all these nullify possible global military intervention for Ukraine.
For now, Ukraine is on its own and will have to defend itself against the aggressors.
For the global citizens, the implication of this war is rising prices of petrol and gas due to sanctions against Moscow which will affect their exportation. Russia is the second largest exporter of natural gas globally after Saudi Arabia.
As it is in every war, the poor people will bear the brunt while the armament manufacturers and corporations will rake in unimaginable profits.
