Why you may not need those false lashes

Artificial or false eyelashes are used to enhance the length, curliness, fullness, and thickness of natural eyelashes. It is an extension made from several materials including mink, synthetic, or horse hair.

But why will a woman not feel proud of her natural eyelashes and has to have an extension fixed to the eyes? A beautician and makeup artist, Blessing Ede, said, false eyelashes are a wonderful way to enhance your eyes without piling on too much makeup.

She said the use of mascara can only darken and lengthen the eyelashes but, false eyelashes can multiply the lashes making the wearer bold and beautiful, adding that it is good for those with naturally small lashes, and that using the false ones is a great way for them to make the lashes look big.”

But a medical practitioner, Dr Ayopo Adeyemi, who once spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria warned women against the use of artificial eyelashes in view of its grievous consequences.

She said the health implications of fixing false eyelashes included corneal abrasions or ulcers, damage of the natural eyelashes, eye sensitivity, amongst others, adding that fixing artificial eyelashes had become an increasingly popular trend in the fashion world as most ladies, regardless of the health implications, seek perfection and glamour.

“Natural eyelashes have their natural way of preventing dirt, sweat, bacteria and other foreign materials from entering into the eyes by trapping and keeping out anything that comes near. False eyelashes, on the other hand, would accommodate dirt, thereby causing different forms of allergy and infections.”

“The use of harmful chemicals on the eyelashes can also cause the natural ones to fall out quicker than they naturally would and it is also dangerous when tools to be used come in close proximity to the eye.”

An online platform, AllDayChic, lists some dangers of false eyelashes:

•  You don’t know what the lashes are made of!

You might be allergic to some materials the producers used to make them and this might cause you irritations or itches. Be careful!

•  Not all false eyelashes are suitable to be worn many times!

You always have to double check to see if they are especially designed to be reused or not. Using the same ones for days, maybe weeks in a row can irritate the eyes causing infections and then you will end up visiting your ophthalmologist for a situation that could have been avoided!

Be careful and always think twice before using something; think if it is worth risking your health for a few hours of beauty!
