Mrs. Kubirat Nofiu has asked an Agege Customary Court to dissolve her 14-years marriage over the husband’s irresponsible behaviour.

Kubirat told the court that “the union has produced three children, Adijat 11 years, Fuhad 9 years and Waheed 5 years.”

She said: “My husband is not caring for me and my children; He went out early and returns at midnights. He drinks to stupor then returned to curse and fight me.

“I can’t have a peaceful life in my marriage, as I am feeling depressed and cheated. He has once sent me packing saying he does not want me in his life anymore.”

Kubirat further told the court that her husband is not responsible and don’t send give her money for food. She said he also refused to send his children to school always claiming he did not have money. “I strive everyday so that I and my children could survive,” she said. 

“He has given birth to one child before our marriage and allowed the child to learn handwork. So, he told me to stop my children from going to school so that they could also learn handwork like his former son.

Meanwhile the respondent, Mr. Muritala Nofiu, a motor engineer pleaded that though he wants dissolution but he’s not guilty of those charges levelled against him.

Nofiu told the court that “I love her; she is the one that did not love me anymore; she acts strangely after our second born because things change so I don’t have money to finance her and the children anymore.”

“I told her to allow the children to go to public school which she refused and told me she can’t allow her children to go there. So, I abandoned her to cater for them alone; since then she refused to heed to my instructions,” he said.

“I can’t tell my wife to cook for me or wash my cloth only if she wished to do it. She won’t allow me to sleep beside her nor have sex with her. I have complained several times to her relatives but she did not take heed,” he added.

The Magistrate Judge, Mr. Williams Philip, after listening to both parties ruled that the parties should settle their differences and continue with their relationship.
