Wike flags off rehabilitation of schools in FCT

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, flagged off reconstruction and total rehabilitation of 19 schools in the territory.

The minister, who warned the contractors against any sabotage of the administration’s efforts in giving conducive learning environment to the students in the territory, said mobilisation fees had been paid to the contractors handling the project with a pledge not to owe any of them while the projects last.

The rehabilitation of the schools was captured in the 2023 supplementary budget, while the rehabilitation and reconstruction of another 20 schools is captured in 2024 budget.

He promised to support the teachers in delivering quality education to the students.

The minister also promised to complete the construction of the abandoned general hospital in the town as soon as possible.

Earlier, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, had told the residents that the country’s future generations deserve the best of learning environment, which informed the decision of the administration.

The contractor handling the rehabilitation of the School for the Gifted Engr. Osondu Ekeekwu, informed the minister that at the point of taking over the site, the only structures met in good shape are those of the mosque and church’s auditoriums rehabilitated by private individuals.

He said anytime the school went on vacations, herdsmen usually take over the premises, making it unfit for use in the subsequent resumption.

The chairman, senate committee on Area Councils and Auxiliary Matters, Senator Jim Kuta, frowned at the absence of the area council chairman at the flag off exercise.
