Five people have died and 92 others sustained injuries following a devastating windstorm and heavy rain that affected 48 communities across seven local government areas of Yobe State.

Dr. Goje Muhammad, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), confirmed the figures on Wednesday in Damaturu.

He said the disaster impacted 1,264 households, displacing a total of 5,022 individuals.

In response, YOSEMA, in partnership with Action Against Hunger (ACF) and with support from the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), distributed life-saving relief to 566 households in Fika and Potiskum LGAs.

A joint needs assessment by SEMA and ACF prioritised the most vulnerable families who lost their homes, essential belongings, or access to hygiene services.

Mohammed Liman Kingimi, ACF’s WASH Project Manager, affirmed the organisation’s commitment to further assistance based on resource availability and ongoing needs.

He said ACF is also preparing to roll out Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) support for the same 566 households to enhance their recovery.

Dr. Goje urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the relief materials and reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations through proactive emergency response initiatives.
