The announcement was made last week in a statement issued on the ACT’s web site and Mr Adebayo now goes home with a cash award and will be part of a mentorship programme, according to the initiator, award winning Nigerian writer, Chika Unigwe.
The statement said in part: “Our judges rated the stories based on originality, use of language,  strength of  writing and that very often indefinable “wow” factor.  After months of reading, they have given us the name of the winner,
“The winner of the inaugural ACT Award is Caleb Adebayo with ‘Bits and Pieces.’ The judges praised Adebayo for his “wonderful ear for dialogue , a strong voice and beautiful writing.”
While congratulating Adebayo for his win, the ACT heaped praise on the other entrants and judges for making sure the inaugural award was a success.
Adebayo beat off competition from Hajara Hussaini Ashara for ‘The Illusionist’, Hymar David for ‘No Fireflies in the Rain’,  Imade Iyamu for ‘What you Saw in the Mirror’, and Dam Michael  for ‘Patron of Matrimony’
The prize is for writers between the ages of 19 and 26.
