The winners in men and women categories at the just concluded BAFEM football competition in Ekiti State have smiled to the bank with different cash prizes totaling over N1.5m.
In the final matches played over the weekend at Oluyemi Kayode stadium in Ado-Ekiti, Ikere United defeated Are FC 2 – 1 to emerge winners in the men’s category while Ekiti Queens beat Ekiti Queen Bees 1 – 0 to come tops in the female category.
The youth football tournament attracted over 20 clubs, comprising of four female and 16 male clubs.
The sponsor of the competition, Hon. Femi Bamisile of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Emure, Gbonyin and Ekiti East described sports, particularly football, as a unifying force.
He also said in view of the current economic situation in the country, the youths must be positively engaged in order to divert their attention from all social vices.
“Football is the most unifying sport in the world. Even when countries are at war, when they say there is a football competition, everybody comes together.
“This BAFEM competition is my own way of taking the youths away from social vices and getting them engaged meaningfully,” he said.
On his part, the Chairman of Ekiti State Football Association, Mr. Bayo Lalenge, assured of his administration’s commitment to developing the youths through sports, particularly football.
At the end of the tournament, winners in the male category received N500,000, runners up N300,000, third place N200,000 while their female counterparts got N200,000, N150,000 and N100,000 respectively.
Other participating teams received N50,000 as consolation prizes.
