Woman accused of killing daughter in Benue

A young woman, Sughshater Ushahemba, has allegedly killed her 11-month-old daughter in the Abeda-Modyul community in Logo LGA of Benue State.

Sources said the woman was caught on Saturday while trying to dispose of the corpse of the child by youths who handed her over to the police of Ugba Division in Logo.

A resident said that some medical practitioners thought the woman might be suffering from Postpartum psychosis (PPP) aggravated by hardship of catering for the child.

A source, however, explained that the woman and the baby went to bed on Friday night with the baby having high temperature, which she noted could have led to the death.

We’re working towards changing the narrative of Nigeria, says Tinubu

She said, “The mistake she made was when day broke she failed to inform her neighbours that this was what happened in the night, because there is a strong belief among our people that when you are having difficulties at night you should call your neighbours to help you and they can be your witnesses. But she never did that.

“So, when day broke, she attempted to bury the baby. If it is not an intentional kind of a thing, she must have informed the next person. So, for her to have attempted doing that without telling anyone, it means there is a skeleton in her cupboard.”

The spokesman of the LGA, Paul Pevikyaa, told our correspondent on telephone that, “She said she was impregnated by her boyfriend and gave birth to the baby girl and the boy abandoned her with the child. She complained that she was suffering with the child and that was why she poisoned the child. She gave her a chemical that is used to kill grass.”

Spokeswoman of the Benue State Police Command, SP Catherine Anene, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on telephone, said the suspect was in custody.
