An Ogba chief magistrate court in Lagos yesterday ordered that a 36-year-old woman, Shukurat Mahmud, be remanded in prison custody for allegedly using a hot iron on her eight-year-old househelp.
Mahmud was brought before the court on a two-count charge of child abuse and assault occasioning harm.
The accused, if found guilty, might be jailed 12 years.
The police said that the incident occurred penultimate Monday at 43, Nurudeen Oyebola Street, Ikorodu, Lagos.
The prosecutor, Superintendent Ayorinde, argued that Mahmud intentionally plugged the electric iron, ensured it was hot and burnt her househelp’s face with it.
Ayorinde urged the court to apply a stiff punishment on the accused, adding that neighbours who reported the incident at the police station felt that the maltreatment by the accused on the girl had become one too many.
Mahmud, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Ayorinde asked the court for a date for hearing to enable him open his case.
The magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted Mahmud bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum and remanded her in prison custody pending when she will perfect the bail conditions.
Osunsanmi adjourned the case matter till February 18, 2019.
