Detectives from the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed her 36-year-old husband to death during a fight at their Lagos Island residence.
Mrs Damilola Ayeni, however, stated that she committed the act in self defence, adding that she never intended to kill her husband.
She said trouble started at about 1am on Saturday after her husband accused her of infidelity, because she missed his calls earlier.
According to her: “ When he came back home at about 1am, he asked where I went to and why I did not pick his calls. I tried to explain that the phone was in the bag and that I didn’t hear it ringing. He accused me of having extra marital affairs and charged towards me with a knife. In defence, I picked the kitchen knife and stabbed him.”
The father of the deceased, Mr Ayeni Sunday, who lives on the same street with his late son, reported the matter to the police at Lion Building division, consequent upon which the suspect was arrested.
Confirming the arrest, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police, said “On August 4, 2018, at about 1.15am, one Ayeni Sunday Omowale, of number 8 Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island reported at Lion Building Police division, that his son, Olumide Ayeni of number 78 Bamgbose street Lagos Island was allegedly stabbed by his wife with a knife on the left side of the chest.
“Victim was rushed to the Lagos Island General hospital, where he later died. The suspect has been arrested while the body was deposited at the Lagos Island General Hospital morgue for autopsy .
“This is one case of domestic violence taken too far. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr Imohimi Edgal, has therefore, reiterated his call on couples to always resolve marital issues amicable, without resorting to violent action that will lead to loss of life,” he said.
