Woman arraigned for allegedly stealing baby in Ekiti

A 23-year-old woman, Aisat Usman, has been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a one-year-old baby.

The prosecutor, Inspector Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 29 at Odo Ado area of Ado-Ekiti.

Apata alleged that the defendant stole the child, Abdulrasheed Erinfolami, from the mother’s shop.

According to him, neighbours raised the alarm after the child was taken, leading to a chase that resulted in the baby’s recovery.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 292(1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

He asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. She was not represented by counsel.

Chief Magistrate Taiwo Ajibade granted her bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned until July 10, 2026, for hearing.
