Woman arrested for stealing N.1m from Lagos firm

A woman in her late 20s, Mrs. Mercy Collins, was on Thursday arrested by the police for allegedly defrauding the Lagos-based company (name withheld) where she works of over N100,000.

According to eye witnesses, the suspect, who is a mother of one, had attempted to run away but was sighted by some of the company’s staff who raised the alarm.

There was commotion at the head office of the accounting firm located along Akowonjo Road, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos, early today when Mrs. Collins was caught.

The suspect however argued that she actually collected the money from one of the company’s client at Iyana-Ipaja yesterday but she was abducted on her way back to the office.

She claimed she later found herself around Ikeja, but the money was missing by then.

“I don’t know how I got to Ikeja because I was unconscious; but when I regained consciousness, I could not find the money on me again,” she said pleading for mercy.

A company staff, who craved anonymity, told our reporter that the suspect has initially applied for a loan from the company two weeks ago but was turned down.

“She is deceitful, she thinks she is smart, she has now collected an ‘automatic loan’ because the loan she asked for was not granted to her,” the staff said.

The suspect has been handed over to the police for further interrogation and trial.
