A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan on Thursday sentenced one Sadiya Afolabi to three years imprisonment for dealing in 900 grams of cannabis sativa.

Justice Nkeonye Maha convicted and sentenced Afolabi after she pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of unlawful possession and dealing in a banned narcotic.

The charges were filed against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The court held that it was satisfied that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge noted that she had considered Afolabi’s plea for leniency, being a first-time offender who expressed readiness to turn a new leaf if given a second chance.

“To serve as a deterrent to others, Afolabi is sentenced to three years imprisonment on each of the two counts.

“However, the sentences shall run concurrently.

“The weed exhibit found in her possession shall be destroyed by the NDLEA,” she said.

In the charge, the prosecutor, Mrs A.A. Balogun, said the convict committed the offence on February 15, 2024, at Oje in Ibadan.

Balogun said NDLEA operatives arrested the convict for being in possession of a sack containing 900 grams of cannabis sativa.

She added that the arrest followed intelligence reports received by the agency.

The offences contravene the provisions of Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. (NAN)
