The police in Imo State have arrested a woman and her husband for allegedly beating her step-daughter to death.
It was gathered that the woman, Prisca David, was beating her 13-year-old step-daughter, Veronica, over some domestic, issues when the girl slumped and died.
The incident reportedly occurred at Ogwuaga Abba in Nwangele Local Government Area of the state on Friday.
In an attempt to hide the cause of the death, Prisca and her husband, Damian, were said to have hired the services of another man identified as John, who tied a rope around the girl’s neck to make the crime look as if the girl committed suicide.
Prisca and her husband, who until the incident, were security guards in the country home of a Port Harcourt-based businessman, Chief Johnbosco Ozigbo, were arrested by the police following an intelligence information.
Ozigbo, who spoke to our correspondent on phone on Sunday, said when the incident was reported to him, he immediately called the police in Nwangele and the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Owerri.
“My security guard called me that his step daughter committed suicide and he needed an advance salary to take her corpse to Taraba State for burial. I was curious on how a 13-year-old girl would take her own life. On inquiry, I was told that his wife, Prisca, hit the girl with a plank on her head and she died immediately. A boy in the compound told me that he saw the woman hit the girl with a plank,” Ozigbo said
The state Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, who confirmed the incident, added that the police had commenced investigation to determine the cause of death.
