A Kano State High Court has sentenced Ebonine Rita Uzoamaka to seven years in prison for obtaining the sum of N5.6 million under false pretenses.

Uzoamaka was arrested after obtaining the funds from her victim by falsely claiming she would supply 500 cartons of D-Rich Baking Powder from Aba, Abia State.

The prosecution said upon receiving the payment, she failed to fulfill the supply contract and instead converted the funds to her personal use.

The convict was arraigned on August 18, 2021, on a five-count charge involving dishonest misappropriation of funds contrary to Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

She initially pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, setting the stage for a full trial. During the proceedings, prosecution counsel, Salihu Sani, called four witnesses and tendered several documents, which were admitted as evidence by the court.

In her defence, the defendant testified as the sole witness.

Delivering judgment on the matter, Justice Sabo convicted and sentenced the defendant to seven years imprisonment.

The judge, however, granted an option of a N500,000 fine.
