An Ikeja chief magistrate’s court yesterday remanded a middle-aged woman, Binta Adebayo, in prison custody for allegedly operating a fake orphanage home where she delivered teenage pregnant girls of their babies and then sold them (babies). 

The presiding magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted Adebayo bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in the like sum and ordered that she be remanded in prison custody pending when she satisfies her bail conditions. 

Detectives attached to the Lagos State police command a fortnight ago stormed what they called the fake orphanage home on Sadiq Street, Igando, Lagos, based on a tip-off and arrested the woman and her husband.  

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said that the accused used her residence ostensibly as an orphanage for young pregnant women, but allegedly for child trafficking. 

Edgal said that after the girls were delivered of their babies, Adebayo would then sell them (the babies) to interested buyers, adding that when she was arrested, three pregnant teenage girls were rescued from the orphanage. 

The rescued victims were identified as Precious Emmanuel, 27; Onome Opute, 25; and 19-year-old Favour Osikweneh. 

Adebayo was yesterday brought before the court on a two-count charge of abduction and child trafficking. 

She, however, pleaded not guilty and the matter was adjourned till May 4, 2018.
