Woman seeks dissolution of 7-yr-old marriage over threat to life

A middle-aged woman, Memunat Tijani, yesterday filed a petition before the customary court sitting in Ake, Abeokuta, Ogun State, seeking dissolution of her seven-year-old marriage to her husband, Morufu Tijani, over allegations of threat to her life, abandonment and acts of irresponsibilty.

Memunat, who resides at the Adatan area of Abeokuta, told the court that she could no longer cope with the marriage, which has produced two children.

She explained that her husband had packed out of the house following a misunderstanding she had with his mother, and had refused to return home even after the matter had been settled.

“My husband had left our home since I gave birth to my second child in 2015, because of a misunderstanding I had with his mother. My mother-in-law packed her things and left our house angrily because of that quarrel. But I had since apologised to her and she had forgiven me.

“But my husband is using that misunderstanding I had with his mother as an excuse and has refused to come home. He said because I chased his mother out of our house, he would not come back home to me and the children.

“I had begged him several times. I also went to his family and friends to plead with him on my behalf, but all my efforts proved abortive.”

Tijani denied some of the allegations levelled against him, describing himself as a responsible father to his children.”

The president of the court, Mrs Olorunwo Sam-Obaleye, appealed to the couple to give room for reconciliation and adjourned the case till November 12, 2018 for judgment.
