A young woman allegedly set her lover ablaze in his home on Shaahu Road, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

Daily Trust gathered that the young man whose name was simply given as Jude,  his mother, and a little child were inside the apartment when it was set on fire at about 1:30 am on Monday.

It was learnt that the woman whose name is yet-to-be ascertained allegedly committed the arson over Jude’s refusal to marry her.

Witnesses said the man and the other victims were fortunate to survive the inferno, though the boyfriend’s body was burnt and he is now receiving treatment in a hospital in Gboko.

The witnesses alleged that Jude had refused to continue marriage plans with the young woman following her bad attitude towards his mother overtime on which basis the relationship strained to the extent that he (boyfriend) ordered her to pack out of his house.

One witness, who does not want his name in print, said both lovers had a heated argument hours before the incident occurred.

It was gathered that the woman later returned with three men in the dead of the night, padlocked the door from outside, and tore the windows’ nets before pouring petrol and setting the building on fire.

But the quick intervention of neighbours enabled their rescue.

Our correspondent gathered that while Jude’s mother and the child sustained minor burns, Jude sustained severe burns.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Catherine Anene, confirmed that the incident happened on Monday night in Gboko.

Anene said the police received report that a girl set her boyfriend and his home on fire after pouring fuel around the building.

She said the duo earlier had an argument during which the girl threatened her lover. She, however, added that no life was lost as the boyfriend escaped alive, but with burns.

The PPRO added that no arrest has yet been made as the girl suspected to have committed the act is currently at large.
