WomanAfrica offers free cancer screening for Abuja residents

Women Missionaries to African Nation (WomanAfrica) conducted free cancer screening at the Primary Health Care Centre, Lugbe, Abuja to commemorate World Cancer Day today.

The screening exercise was intended to create awareness for cancer, educate women on the importance of early detection and enlighten on the need to get treatment, said Rev. Ijeoma Emeribe founder of WomanAfrica.

Emeribe said, "After the screening, those who are diagnosed with cancer and cannot finance their treatment will be treated."

"A cancer-free society starts with testing and screening. Some people are scared of going for screening because of cost, that is why we are providing free screening and also commit to their treatment financially."

Dr. Henrietta Umoke, head of the medical team, said, "We are most concerned about breast cancer because it is the leading cause of death among cancers, but with early detection, it can be cured."

"Call it what it is, cancer is a killer disease, every sexually active girl should start self breast examination after each menses. And men should also be encouraged to go for examination because cases of prostate Cancer is also on the rise."

Mrs. Iheoma Okafor, one of the beneficiaries of the programme, said she was "happy the foundation has come to our aid, now I know how to examine myself.”

WomanAfrica is a faith based organization focused on supporting women and children through a variety of programmes such as women’s enterprise businesses, educational tools and health care initiatives, all designed to educate, empower and inspire.
