The Head of NFA’s Women Football Unit, Danlami Alanana, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that 20 clubs were set to take part in the competition.

“The competition will kickoff at all its designated venues with about 10 matches as 20 clubs are ready to participate.

“We have put in place the necessary things for the competition to start as scheduled and we are confident that all will go well,’’ he said.

Alanana said that the NFA had planned the competition’s draws for Dec. 15 in Abuja.

“The draws ceremony will hold on Dec. 15 from 10 am at the Abuja National Stadium’s FIFA Goal Project. This is to give glamour to the competition.

“It will also enable the clubs to go back and prepare more for the season and, especially for the opening matches of Jan. 8,’’ he said.

The NFA official said that various developments led to the delay in the competition getting off the ground.

“It would have been good if the competition had started some weeks ago or it is starting in the next few days but we are all aware of the fact that various matters led to the Nigerian football calendar being extended.

“For example, the season-ending Super Six League competition is yet to be played because of the international engagements of our national teams this year.

“We are still looking for dates to fix for the event.

“But the important thing is that we are ending the season very soon and a new one is kicking off on Jan. 8,’’ he said.

Alanana disclosed that clubs taking part in the league had already been grouped into two.

“In Group A, are the Pelican Stars of Calabar who led Group A last season, Oguche Babes of Lokoja, Kogi Confluence of Lokoja and Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia.

“The rest are Ibom Angels of Uyo who are the Group A runners-up last season, State House FC of Abuja, Adamawa Queens of Yola, FCT Queens of Abuja, Sunshine Queens of Akure and Inneh Queens of Benin,’’ he said.

Alanana, who is also Secretary of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Nigerian Women Football League, Group B clubs are Tokas Queens of Lagos and Tewo Queens of Ibadan.

“Others are Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt who are the 2008/2009 league winners and Delta Queens, who were the top two teams of Group B last season.

“The rest are Aregbe Queens of Osogbo, NITO Queens of Ibadan, Police Machine of Lagos, Remo United of Sagamu, Garden Queens of Abeokuta and the 2007 winners, Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa,’’ he said. (NAN)
