National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) has graduated 40 female artisans specialising in carpentry, plumbing, masonry, tiling and joinery.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Phylis Nwokedi, said the goal is to launch a model programme that will train a new generation of female artisans to rival their male counterparts.

 "The program recognises the goal of job creation and wealth generation of the present administration to provide skilled workforce for the Nigerian construction industry," said Nwokedi.

Alhassan Eunice, a student, trained in plumbing and piping, told Daily Trust that with the experience gathered from the programme, she can now contribute to society meaningfully.

"The program has improved our lives, with this new skill, most of us now have direction on how to live our lives and contribute to our society," she said.

The programme coordinator, NCWD,  Sadeeq Omar said, "Gone are the days when women are restricted to just packing sand at construction site; today, they are involved in every aspect of it, which is a step in the right direction."
