The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria (APWEN), NNPC Limited Chapter, Engr. Adefunke Adekunle has promised to expand Scholarship and STEM outreach programmes to inspire the next generation of female engineers.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during a Public Lecture & her inauguration ceremony as the second Chairman of the association, Engr Adekunle also assured that her administration would raise the number of female engineers in Nigeria.
She said: “Engineering remains the backbone of national development. However, women in this field still face challenges that limit their representation and growth.
“As the second Chairman of APWEN NNPC Limited Chapter, my vision is clear: to deepen our impact, expand opportunities for young women in engineering, and foster an inclusive environment where female engineers can thrive.”
The APWEN Chairman, maintained that her administration would focus on creating more opportunities for women in engineering, providing mentorship, and promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education for girls.
She pointed out key focus of her administration to include education and mentorship, professional development and capacity building, advocacy and visibility as well as networking and collaboration.
While noting that she would create more training opportunities for members, she said collaboration with government agencies, professional bodies to advocate policies that supports women engineering will also be a top priority.
“With collective streof our members, the unwavering support of our allies and our shared determination, we will break barriers, redefine possibilities and inspire generations to come,” she said.
In her remarks, the President, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Margaret Oguntala encouraged the APWEN members to work together in synergy to produce quality output.
She also urged the new executives to improve on the capacity of members and work towards delivering quality projects.
While congratuling the new leadership and encouraged them to surpass the achievements of their predecessors, the NSE President emphasised that effective leadership is crucial for advancing the interests of women engineers and promoting their participation in the engineering field.
She called on members to rally behind the new leadership, even as she charged them to intensify efforts to promote girl-child education.
She also maintained that the women engineers believe in the abilities of the newly appointed Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Engineer Bashir Ojulari, and are going to support him to succeed.
Meanwhile, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, Engineer Bashir Ojulari, who was the father of the day was honoured with an Excellence in Leadership award along others.
The Guest Speaker, Engr Yetunde Aladeitan urged the women engineers to celebrate and showcase their achievements as women.
“We need to sell our stories, share our experiences, and highlight our contribution in the field of engineering to the society. Nobody will carry your story, for you to know me, I have to stand up here to tell you that I’m an engineer. So we need to tell our story to the world for the world to appreciate us. And learn from what we are able to do.”
