The Special Adviser to the President on Health, Dr Salma Anas Kolo, who is also a board member of the development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), has underscored the contributions of the centre on efforts to integrate the National Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy at the state level.
She spoke at a retreat of stakeholders convened in Abuja as part of efforts to implement the WEE Policy at the state level.
Dr Kolo said dRPC’s involvement in the domestication of the WEE policy commenced in January 2023.
She emphasised the centre’s pivotal role in the production, sensitisation and promotion of the draft policy among civil society organisations (CSOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across Nigeria.

“Several states have made substantial progress in domesticating the policy,” Dr Kolo stated, acknowledging the momentum gained nationwide.
She announced that “Kaduna State took the lead, to officially launch its domesticated WEE policy on November 21, 2024.”
Addressing the focus “Domestication of Kano State’s Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy”, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Disabled, Hajiya Abdullahi Sani, emphasised the significance of the draft policy.
Hajiya Sani said the document transcended being merely a policy but a strategic framework designed to create an inclusive environment where women can fully embrace their potential.
She highlighted the policy’s seamless alignment with Kano State’s broader blueprint for women’s economic empowerment programmes.
The commissioner said that empowering women is not only beneficial for them but a fundamental driver of sustainable development within the state and the nation.
The primary aim of the retreat is to streamline gender policies and tackle the disparities hindering women’s access to financial benefits and opportunities across various sectors in Nigeria.
It focused specifically on the domestication of Kano State’s draft women’s economic empowerment policy.
The initiative is being supported by the dRPC, the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF), WEE catalyst fund partner (Fable Advisory & IWEI).
The collaboration underscores the collective commitment towards advancing women’s economic empowerment in Nigeria
The domestication of the WEE policy in Kano is anticipated to serve as a model for other states in Nigeria, paving the way for a unified national approach to gender equality and women’s economic inclusion.
The move is expected to significantly address the challenges women face in accessing financial resources and opportunities, ultimately contributing to broader economic growth and development in the nation.
