The Association of Professional Women Builders in Nigeria (APWBN) has attributed  the rampant cases of collapse buildings across the country to lack of use of survey plan and other necessary information as a guide during construction.

The group stated this in a communiqué issued at end of its seminar   with theme ‘Collaborations Among Women Professionals of the Built Environment to Curb/Eradicate Incessant Building Collapse in Nigeria’, held recently in Abuja. 

The communiqué stated also that compromising integrity by professionals on the quality of materials and workmanship as well as non-collaboration in enforcement of laws that can eradicate building the incidents have contributed to building collapse. 

Giving more reasons for building collapse, the communiqué read: “Inadequate mentoring among women professionals and lack of integration of all professionals in the built environment right from the design stage to completion; Lack of understanding of the behaviour of materials used for construction; The commencement of projects before arriving at the cost; The idea of copy and pasting specifications/budgets of old contracts for new ones; as well as awarding contracts to contractors with low sum which may lead to abandonment/collapse.”

In her speech, president of APWBN, Mrs. Lami Kawu Muhammad, said  women are endowed with integrity, intelligence, intuition, and expert management technique.

She urged women in the building and construction sector to unite professionally   to prevent building collapse in the country, which she said has continued to cause death of precious, innocent lives and destruction of properties.
