Women urged to improve tax compliance

The Society of Women in Taxation ( SWIT) on Tuesday held the 2018 edition of its annual seminar in Abuja, with theme, ‘Tax Compliance, Entrepreneurship and National Development’.
The vice president, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) and chairperson of the occasion, Ms Gladys O. Simplice, said the society was staging this year’s event on three thematic areas – tax compliance, entrepreneurship and national development -which will be treated in two sessions.
“We are sensitising women on their responsibility in issues of taxation and not to be a rebellion to the CITN as may be perceived in some quarters,” she said and urged women to improve compliance with taxation.
In her remark, the Acting Registrar, Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Lady Azuka Obiageli Azinge, said no nation can survive without meaningful earning especially through taxation as it served as the backbone of revenue generation.
She urged government to step up compliance with taxation by incorporating programmes that provide special incentives which enabled Medium and Small Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) to thrive and generate revenue.
On collaboration of CAC and FIRS, she said “We ensure that all registered businesses are issued TIN attached to them.”
In his goodwill message, the president of Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Chief Cyril I. Ede, who was represented by Mr. Abiodun Aina FCTI, recognised the importance of women in the society and the institute.
“Women are highly focused, dedicated and multitasking which is a great skill I admire. At the induction of CITN not too long ago, women won most of the prizes and I was pushed to ask men where we were?” he said.
The guest speaker, Mary-Helen C. Nnadi, who spoke on the theme ‘Entrepreneurship as a Pathway to Sustainable Growth’, urged everyone to go into business and be able to look into the future.
She presented an abbreviation, ‘RCPR – Research-Create-Package-Release’, as the potent way of getting into a business and ensuing sustainability.
Nnadi urged all entrepreneurs to have at least a lawyer and an accountant in running their business.
Another speaker, Dr. Amina Salihu, speaking on the topic ‘Multiple Income Stream- A Focus on Agripreneurship’, urged participants to know their Strength Weakness, Opportunities and threats ( SWOT).
In her welcome address, the national chairperson, Mrs. Ezinwa Okoroafor, thanked participants in the sector for putting efforts to promote the roles of women in taxation.
