Construction work at the Nnamdi Azikiwe’s Mausoleum in Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State, is yet to resume four months after the official visit to the site by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, Daily Trust investigations have revealed.
The minister had in June, this year, assured that the project would be completed soon during an inspection of the progress of work on the site, the second Niger Bridge and other major projects in the state.
He said it was one little way to appreciate those who had served the country.
“I came here in pursuant of the commitment of the federal government and that of President Muhammadu Buhari to complete the project,” he said.
Daily Trust investigations revealed that construction work in the site had been suspended for several years over non-payment of funds to company in charge of the work.
The source, however, said work might likely resume on the project following the delivery of some equipment in the site.
“I learnt the contractors have been paid by the federal government after the minister’s visit. The presence of some of the equipment in the site suggests that work might likely resume there soon,” the source said.
The Chairman, Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council and Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, during the minister’s visit, had called for the speedy completion of the Mausoleum, saying the delay in the completion of the project after 20 years is an embarrassment.
